There are about twenty-four million people living on an island that is my home country, Taiwan, which is located in the center of eastern Asia and surrounded by the Pacific Ocean.Furthermore, Korea and Japan are the north of Taiwan; Philippines is to the south of Taiwan, and China to the west of it, but to its east is the wide Pacific Ocean. In fact, the country of Taiwan includes other smaller islands: Kinmen, Matsu, and Penghu.Although its area is only about one third the size of North Carolina, it isthe seventh richest country in the world. How can Taiwan have such surprising wealth so as to allow its people to live a steady, plentiful, liberal, democratic life?Of course, both the government and its citizens have been striving for a long time and still continue to create it gradually.Four aspects are important to explain its success; they are its history, its religion, its economy, and its educational system.
